OBJECTIVES:

The purpose of this module is to provide an introduction to the fundamentals of computer network design and to develop the skills necessary for designing and maintaining simple routed LAN networks. It also prepares students, in part, for the CCNA certification exam.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Understands the concepts of layered architecture, the OSI reference model and th role of networking standards
  • Understands the various LAN technologies currently employed · Design basic IP networks and subnetting
  • Design, implement and basic LAN topologies for a variety of network environments · Distinguish between link state and distance vector based routing protocols
  • Understands the operation of TCP/IP protocol suite , · Perform basic IP configuration on commercial routers.
  • Carry out basic LAN testing and trouble shooting · Introduce the concepts of Network Management

PREREQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Basic electronics, communications or IT to GNVQ or NVQ level III or equivalent

INDICATED CONTENT:

Networking standards and architectures, IEEE, OSI 7-layer model, ANSI etc Networks and switching technologies, circuit message and packet switching. WANS, LANs and MANs, LANs: topologies, media, MAC protocols-CSMA/CD token Ring etc
MAC and IP addressing, Subnet masking. LAN bridges, routers and switches Static and dynamic routing ,routing protocols-RIP.

Introduction to transport protocols(TCP/IP) and higher layer protocols Basic LAN design, implementation, operation and maintenance

PROGRAMME OF STUDY

The module will be delivered as follows
15x3 hr lecture/self paced tuition(using Web-based multi-media curriculum) 15x3 hr tutorial/practical
Lecture/self paced tuition 45 hours Tutorial/Practical 45 hours Directed and student centred learning 30 hours Total 120 hours
Remote access to the Web-based curriculum will enable distance learning support. This will require internet access from home/work etc

ASSESSMENT

To obtain Cisco Networking Academy Certification, all on-line tests must be completed with a minimum pass mark of 40%, and, successfully complete the semester one and two skills based tests.
Those who achieve a pass mark of > 70% in the end of semester final exams, will be eligible for a 40% discount voucher for the INTRO 640-821 exam or can continue with the CCNA3 and CCNA4 course to take the full CCNA exam with a discount.
Achieving a pass mark of 80% in these assessments prepares students, in part, for the CCNA certification exam
.
